Other Questions
How do I add
or remove a staff user
of the system?
Rochdale School Network
accounts are managed centrally by the EDIT Team. You
should print a change of user request form to be found
here
and fax this form back to the EDIT Team. The
change of user will be affected and an e-mail confirming this change will be
sent to the office user in school.

How do I add a pupil to the
system?
Pupils do not have
individual log in accounts on the Rochdale Schools Network but use KS1, KS2
etc. as was the case previously.
The use of individual pupil e-mail
accounts is a new development on the Rochdale Schools Network and their use is currently being trialled in
a number of schools in conjunction with the School Improvement Service.
All pupils in Key Stage 2 will
have e-mail accounts generated using information from the
school's SIMS system. In order to action this it
will be necessary to ensure that your school's SIMS system is up
to date and that changes files are regularly submitted to the LEA (please
see the SIMS FAQ page for more information).
Pupils will be able to use these accounts to e-mail
any other user with an account on the Rochdale Schools Network. Pupil e-mail
accounts will be deleted when the pupil leaves Key Stage 2 education in Rochdale.

What are user profiles and
policies and how can I use them?
A user profile
is a record of user settings.
An example of a profile item
is desktop
wallpaper which is deployed when
a user logs in - each log in has a profile applied to the workstation being used.
This means that, regardless of which machine is being used, the user has a
familiar environment in which to work.
Profiles may be configured
and stored automatically for staff users who login to the system.
As users change the layout of their desktop the
changes will be remembered by the system for the next
time they log in.
When you are logged in to the Rochdale Schools
Network your desktop is also governed by a set of pre-defined policies. Certain users have more access to
configure their profiles than others. An example would be that
pupils have restricted access to icons in control
panel. Pupil profiles are locked so that settings
allocated by the Curriculum Desktop Console may be protected.

How do I install software?
If you have neither an application server or a
CD server your only choice is to install software on workstations.
To install
software to curriculum workstations,
login as ITcord
and install the
software using the instructions supplied in the public
folders area (normally to the
C:\program files folder on each
machine). You should then copy shortcut icons to the relevant pupil login folders using the curriculum desktop
console.
If you wish to install
software to an Application server
or CD server then we would encourage you to attend one of the
IT Cord sessions
run regularly at the EDIT centre or to contact
helpdesk@edit.org.uk

How do I add a computer to
my schools network?
Whilst
connecting a machine to a computer network is complicated, there is no step
of the process which cannot be performed by using the ITCord log
in.
However, as
there is quite a lot involved in a complete
workstation installation, EDIT recommends that a person adding workstations
to a school network has some familiarity with the
Rochdale Schools Network environment.
As each machine connected to the
network must be known to central servers, you
will need to obtain a valid workstation network
name from Edit before you begin.
Please e-mail helpdesk@edit.org.uk
to obtain a machine name and then e-mail the helpdesk again once the
workstation has been added to activate the account.
Complete notes on adding a
machine to your school network can be found in the
public folders area,
which is accessible through your e-mail client
on the
Rochdale Schools Network.

What is my Internet
connection speed?
The
bandwidth available to Rochdale Schools is currently five megabytes, managed and uncontended.
This bandwidth is constantly monitored and may be ramped up should the need
arise. It is useful to note that the vast majority of requests for access
are met from content cached on schools' servers and on dedicated caching
servers managed by the EDIT team and therefore do not place any demand on
the internet connection.

What is my E-mail address?
Staff e-mail addresses have
been generated using information previously supplied and are the same as your login
name with @myschool.rochdale.sch.uk, for example
mburrows@hamer.rochdale.sch.uk
A list of
e-mail accounts
has been supplied to the school –
you may like to ask the school administrator who should have the original list. If this
list is
not available, ask the school administrator to request a
copy from helpdesk@edit.org.uk

How do I find my password?
A list of
account passwords
has been supplied to the school –
you may like to ask the school administrator who should have the original list. If this
list is
not available, ask the school administrator to request a
copy from helpdesk@edit.org.uk

How do I re-set my
password?
At present you will need to get in touch with
EDIT to re-set your password for you.
Please e-mail
helpdesk@edit.org.uk with your request.

Why do I still get Spam?
Spam is unsolicited E-mail. The Rochdale
School Network has a server in place to interrogate incoming E-mail and
remove Spam. The system works by applying a set of rules
to the content of the e-mail (for example, the use of key words such as
viagra, loan and profanity). The development of
this set of rules needs fine tuning to remove spam whilst not deleting genuine
mail.
Spammers are becoming more and more sophisticated in trying to
circumnavigate spam filters (for example a mail with the
subject 'for you' would be impossible to stop without affecting regular
e-mail traffic).
Microsoft and other corporations are
themselves are in the process of actively pursuing spammers
through the courts.
Hopefully users on the broadband system will already
have noticed a large drop in the amount of incoming spam
as we continually refine our spam filtering.
You can help to ensure that the amount
of spam within the network is kept to a minimum by following a few rules:
 |
Protect your email address and
password: Guard your email address and do not unnecessarily give it out.
Also ensure that you never give your password to anyone - a favourite
tactic of spammers is to hijack an account and then use it to send out
thousands of spam emails. |
 |
Be careful what you click on:
Never click on the 'Unsubscribe' link in junk email you get; it generally
does not work, and may actually result in your getting even more spam. |
 |
Report any unwanted email to the
helpdesk so that we can add the details of the senders to our automatic filters. |
 |
Consider using outlook’s features
to control what happens to your e-mail. You can easily block email from a
particular account, Internet email address or Internet domain and even all
Internet users if you wish. You can also choose to ignore any emails
containing pictures or attachments.

I would like the Administrative password to the system. What is it?
In order to protect the
integrity and stability of the Rochdale Schools Network it is not
possible to share these server administrator
passwords with schools. This is
exactly as was the case with the previous NT4 Servers.
As all schools are now connected to an
enterprise network the administrative password no longer controls just the
server in your school but every school server on
the system and all core servers that
service all the user accounts, the backup and
filter systems. In effect an individual in possession of
administrator password could delete every scrap of information from every
school and delete the backups for good measure.
What schools usually want
when asking for administrator level access is the ability to control
their own environment from the school server inwards to the curriculum
system. Edit have been careful to set up the
necessary permissions in school systems to
achieve this even more fully than was previously the case.
All
functions
that may be reasonably required by a school to
administer its curriculum network are available
using the IT Co-ordinator login and password. These
functions include adding new workstations to the system, loading
curriculum software, configuring machine for pupil use
and much more.
Initial training on some of
these features was delivered as part of the recent IT Coordinator's sessions
and a technical guide, written for use by schools
who wish to add their own workstations to the network can be found in
the public folders on the school mail system.
Further guides
and mechanisms will be developed in line with requests from schools and
further training sessions arranged.

You need three pieces of
information to login to the school network
 |
Username
|
 |
Password
|
 |
Domain Name (always
SCHNET).
|
Your school has supplied the
EDIT Team with a Username and Password for you and this has been used to
generate a user account on the system for every member of staff.
Pupils share a series of generic logins
(as was the case with the
previous system). Generic accounts are also available for use by IT
Coordinators, SEN Coordinators and peripatetic users.
Generic usernames have a
school identifier tacked onto the end of them in order to separate out the ITcord user at Hamer from the ITcord user at Meanwood. An
example of a generic username is itcord.hamer
Examples of generic logins
include:
 |
KS1.hamer
|
 |
KS2.hamer
|
 |
reception.hamer
|
 |
vi.hamer
|
 |
nursery.hamer
|
 |
pd.hamer
|
 |
itcord.hamer
|
 |
sen.hamer
|
 |
rans.hamer
|
Staff logins are of the format:
 |
Mbateson
|
 |
Dhaworth
|
To Login
 |
Enter your username |
 |
Enter your password |
 |
Ensure that the domain
name reads SCHNET |
 |
Press the return key |
If your login is successful
your desktop will appear, otherwise you will be returned to the login
screen.

What facilities are available to configure computers for pupils with Special
Needs?Windows XP Professional offers
a range of features to improve access for users with particular needs. The
EDIT team has worked closely with the Rochdale Additional Needs service in
order to identify which features are of use.
A list of accessibility
features is available via the
Accessibility Options icon in control panel. IT Coordinators may make use of
the SEN, VI and PD user profiles created in each school by the EDIT Team.
Additional accounts may be requested and schools are invited to discuss
their individual requirements with EDIT by logging a call by e-mail to
helpdesk@edit.org.uk

Under the new system, mail
is collected and stored on servers managed by EDIT. On these mail servers, a separate mailbox for every
user on the system is held and mail will stay in a user's mailbox until it is
deleted by the user.
A piece of software known
as an E-mail client is used to read, write and organise e-mail and e-mail
is accessed on the system in two distinct ways:
for the head teacher and
administrative staff (who normally will use the same computer), Microsoft
Outlook is the preferred mail client and has been individually configured
for these particular users at the time of system setup and requires no
additional logging in procedure
other users on school (who
are more likely to use a variety of machines) access their mail using a
web based version of Microsoft Outlook (Outlook Web Access). To access
e-mail using this client:
 |
start Internet explorer |
 |
look
to the right hand side of the home page and select either staff e-mail
or pupil e-mail |
 |
after being asked to
confirm security details a login screen appears |
 |
at this point you can
select either a premium desktop with many features or a basic desktop
with reduced features by highlighting your choice using the appropriate
radio button |
 |
to
login you will need your username and password again -
this time you
must precede the username with the domain name (always schnet) and a
forward slash for example schnet/mbateson or schnet/ks1.hamer |
 |
the password is the same
as the one used at login |
You will be presented with
the desktop requested. If you have selected the premium web outlook, your
desktop will look like this,

If selected, the basic web
outlook desktop will look like this,

 |
Clicking the new button
will allow you to send new E-Mail |
 |
You can select users
throughout the RSN by using the Address books |

As more schools and users are
added to the system, these will automatically appear in the listing.

When you login to the
system certain things happen
 |
The system verifies to
see if you are allowed to use the school network |
 |
The
profile associated with the log in is applied |
 |
You are assigned
permissions as to what you can or cannot do on the system |
 |
You are assigned drive
letter mappings appropriate to your login |
You will find when logged
on that in addition to the usual drive letters C: (your computer's hard
drive) and D: (usually the CD drive), you may be assigned other drive
letters linking to areas on the server the most common of which are likely
to be -:
H: your own home
area where you may store your own work, no other user has access to this
area
P: a shared drive
reserved for the head teacher and school administrative staff
O: an open drive
for file sharing by all staff members
S: a drive used by
the school's SIMS system
W: a pupils work
folder area if you have an application server
N: a drive reserved
for programs if you have an application server
I: - J: - K: - l: Drives apparent if you have a CD Server in school.
The security of data held
on these drives can easily be compromised if a user leaves
a machine logged in. Any user accessing network drives has permission to
delete their contents.
Always log off when you
have finished using a machine – School staff members have far greater
permissions on the system than pupils.
Configuring your schools
Intranet
You can see the home page of your schools Intranet when you first
open up your Internet browser.

From the home page staff with the appropriate permissions can add new
announcements, contacts, discussion groups etc.
For example from the screen above clicking the link to ‘add a new
announcement’ will let you do exactly that.

Downloading high-resolution clips
from British Pathé
The
10 Regional Broadband Consortia have negotiated a licence for all schools,
teachers, pupils and students to be able to download high-resolution files
from the British Pathé archive website. You can download low-resolution
files (128Kbs) for free from their website, but high-resolution files
(518Kbs) normally cost £25 - £500 each depending on intended use. However
you can get them for free.
The
film clips (3,500 hours) and the stills (2,000,000 to choose from) are
licensed for educational use and can be edited for use in ‘Powerpoint’
type presentations, used with data projectors and whiteboards and placed
on to school intranets or the Rochdale Schools Network. They must not be
used on websites, published over the WWW or otherwise be made available
beyond the school environment or be used for any commercial purpose.
Important note: you must be connected to the RSN
to download files. You will not be able to download the
high-resolution files for free from home.
Important note: Teachers and school managers are advised to read the Terms
and Conditions before using these resources with students and pupils.
